City of Tuscaloosa to host Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge

Tuscaloosa, Ala. - The City of Tuscaloosa will host the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge April 19-20 near the drill field on 13th Avenue East behind University Mall.The Firefighter Combat Challenge, as seen on ESPN for more than 10 years, is designed to encourage firefighter fitness and demonstrate the extremities of the job to the public. Competing teams are required to wear full gear and a breathing apparatus as they race head-to-head, performing a series of five tasks including climbing a five-story tower, hoisting, chopping, dragging hoses and rescuing a life-sized, 175 lb. victim.The event will include individual and team events on Friday, April 19 at 4 p.m. and team tandems and relays on Saturday, April 20, 8 a.m.-noon. Tuscaloosa Mayor Walter Maddox will kick off the event on Friday at 4 p.m. with an opening ceremony.Team Tuscaloosa, made up of local firefighters of the City of Tuscaloosa, will compete against various teams of firefighters throughout the country.  A wide range of volunteer positions are available for the challenge.
