Police Impound
Purpose
One often time forgotten aspect of law enforcement is "what happens to all the vehicles you tow?" Well, in the case of most accidents, vehicles are towed to the various towing yards to await insurance claims and repairs.
However, many cars are impounded and must be held by the department. Cars may be impounded for a variety of reasons including: abandonment, criminal involvement, evidentiary value and recovery after being stolen. Cars impounded by TPD are held in one of two secure facilities until they can be released to the rightful owners or sold at auction. If your car is impounded and you need to have someone else pick it up, fill out the Impound Authorization to Release Form.
Sergeant Don Thompson is in charge of our vehicle pound.
Hours of Operation for the Police Impound are Monday thru Friday 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM.

Wrecker Services
Sergeant Thompson also coordinates wrecker licensing and our wrecker "rotation" system. When a traffic accident occurs and the car must be towed, the driver or owner of the vehicle can request a specific wrecker company tow their car. If they have no wrecker preference, the responding officer will call for a "rotation wrecker". The company on the top of the list is called to tow the vehicle and then will be moved to the bottom of the list. This way each qualifying wrecker service gets an equal share of business. All "rotation wreckers" charge the same fee when called by TPD.
If your company would like to be considered for inclusion as a rotation wrecker, you must submit the
Rotation Wrecker Application and
Wrecker Company Information forms for your company and the
Wrecker Driver Application for each driver. Additionally, you will need to complete one
Criminal History Request Form (ABI-46), one
Driver History Request Form (DL-3) for the owner(s) of the company and all drivers. Please review the
Wrecker Ordinances for information regarding the regulations concerning the operation of wreckers within the city.
