The City of Tuscaloosa is governed by the Mayor/Council form of government.  The Mayor is the executive branch of the City and serves as the full-time chief administrative officer who is responsible for (1) Managing and directing the City’s 1,200 employees and 15 departments; (2) Preparing and executing the budgets of the City (3) Implementing policies and procedures of the Tuscaloosa City Council; (4) Providing direction in absence of Council policy.  As an elected official, the Mayor is the chief presiding officer at all Council meetings who has the power of (1) Making policy recommendations to the Council (2) Approving or vetoing ordinances of a permanent nature of general operation passed by the Council; (3) Serving as the ambassador for the City both at home and abroad; (4) Voting as a member of the Council in case of a tie.
