Owning or driving a “Vehicle For Hire” within the City of Tuscaloosa requires special licensing from the city. The Tuscaloosa Police Department administers the issuance of these licenses. Sergeant Don Thompson is in charge of this process
The process for becoming licensed is lengthy but simple. Complete all the forms in this packet and purchase your money orders. When this is done you will need to contact me and schedule an appointment. When you are working on the forms be thorough because errors and discrepancies will slow the process and even result in your application being declined. Be sure to have the Application and the Criminal history form notarized.
When you arrive for your appointment you must bring the two money orders and a valid Alabama Driver’s License and ten dollars ($10.00) in cash or money order. The state accepts only money orders. You will need one money order (only) for twenty-five dollars ($25.00) for the ABI. One money order (only) for five dollars and seventy-five cents, ($5.75) for the DPS.
The initial face to face interview will involve a cursory examination of your criminal and driver history. A picture will be taken for use in the ID card in the final phase. If the initial interview shows no discrepancies then I will issue a 45 day permit which will allow you to begin work as a chauffeur immediately. The paperwork will then be sent to Montgomery and the background check process will begin. Full disclosure up front is best because the fees will not be refunded if your application is denied.
If you should have any questions during the process feel free to call.To make your appointment call: (205) 349-2121 or (205) 349-0387. You can also e-mail .
