When do I use 911?
Dial 911 for an emergency. An emergency is any serious medical problem, any type of fire or any life-threatening situation. You should also call 911 to report crimes that are in progress whether or not a life is threatened.
You should not dial 911 to report non-emergency incidents such as vandalism, intoxicated persons who are being disorderly or a vehicle break-in after the suspect is gone.
Learn about two very serious issues – the misuse of 911 for non-emergencies and the lack of accurate location information from mobile phones – at APCO International's Public Information About 911 page.
