Tuscaloosa Firefighters Take Smoke Alarm Safety Door to Door

Tuscaloosa firefighters will be in the El Dorado East neighborhood Wednesday, July 9, beginning at 9 a.m. installing free smoke alarms and advising residents about potential fire hazards. El Dorado East is located at the intersection of Skyland Boulevard and Hargrove Road.Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue Service has conducted door-to-door fire safety and smoke alarm campaigns since 2006. Firefighters have visited 6,387 single-family residences in Tuscaloosa as part of their program, Get Alarmed! Tuscaloosa. Funding for the smoke alarms is through Emergency Management Agency's Assistance to Firefighters Grant program.So far in 2014, there have been 61 residential fire fatalities statewide, two in Tuscaloosa County. In 2013, there were 81 fire fatalities for the entire year. Smoke alarms save lives. About two-thirds of all home fire deaths are in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
