Transportation Museum to Feature Gee's Bend Quilters

The Mildred Westervelt Warner Transportation Museum will host three quilters from Gee's Bend, Ala. Thursday, March 7 from 5 to 8 p.m. for its monthly community-wide Art Night.Quilters will sing, demonstrate hand-sewing quilt patterns and narrate accounts of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s visits to Gee's Bend in the 1960s.This program coincides with the museum's current exhibit that documents King's influence on neighboring Selma, Ala., “Selma to Montgomery: The March for the Right to Vote.” In the 1960s, the city of Camden shut down the ferry to discourage residents from voting for equality after King visited Gee's Bend.Quilters from the community of Gee's Bend create renowned modern art in the form of hand-made quilts. These quilts have been exhibited internationally, across the United States and most recently at the Mildred Westervelt Warner Transportation Museum.Suggested donation to attend the program is $2.
