City of Tuscaloosa Holds Renaming Ceremony for Gary Fitts Street

The City of Tuscaloosa held a street renaming for Gary Fitts St. on Thursday, November 30 at 10 a.m. at 1806 6th St.

Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox, Councilor Lee Busby and Forrest Fitts spoke during the ceremony.

"Gary Fitts was a difference maker in his life. He treated everyone with respect," said Mayor Walt Maddox. "And when the City takes an opportunity to rename one of its thoroughfares, this is absolutely the standard we should have."

The street, formerly known as 6th St., is now Gary Fitts St.

"Gary Fitts was a warrior, a husband, a father, a business leader, a civic leader and a giver to his community, family and friends around him, said Councilor Lee Busby. "

Travis Gary Fitts was born on November 21, 1933 in Tuscaloosa, AL. He obtained his B.S. from Vanderbilt University and attended flight school in Pensacola, FL. Fitts served as a naval aviator in the Marine Corps reserves for over 30 years. In 1959, he returned to Tuscaloosa to work with his father, Jim Fitts Jr. in their family business, Fitts Agency, Inc. Following his retirement, it was one of the largest independent insurance agencies in West Alabama. An avid leader, Fitts served in many roles both in his industry and as a volunteer. Gary Fitts passed away on May 28, 2022.

"I feel his presence now as we're here today to recognize his lifetime of doing the right thing in service to God, his family, his country and his community," said Forrest Fitts. "My family is honored by this recognition and we thank you all for being here with us today."
