Tuscaloosa City Councilor Odom Passes Away

Tuscaloosa City Council Member Burrell Odom passed away today.
 
“I am shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of beloved councilman Burrell Odom,” said Mayor Walter Maddox. “He had a kind and gentle soul. He was a genuine representative of District One and a good friend to all. Stephanie joins me in sending prayers to his family and loved ones, and we offer our deepest condolences.”
 
In 2013 Odom was elected to serve as the District One representative on the Tuscaloosa City Council.
 
Odom was born and raised in Mobile, Ala., and was educated in the Mobile Public School System. After graduating from Murphy High School in 1970, he furthered his education at Stillman College from 1970 to 1974 and attended Shelton State Community College (C.A. Fredd Campus). Odom retired from Uniroyal/Goodrich (Michelin). He was a member of Weeping Mary Baptist Church where he was a deacon. He was very active in the Tuscaloosa School System, serving on numerous committees and as the past president/vice president of the PTA at Stillman Heights Elementary and Central High Schools. Odom was a member of SCLC, NAACP, Tuscaloosa Golf Association and the Stillman College Alumni Association, where served as president. He was married to the former Phyllis L. Wade for over forty years and they have four children and four grandchildren.
 
Maddox has ordered all City flags to be flown at half-staff until Odom’s funeral.

City Council meetings scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 23 have been cancelled.
