Mayor Walt Maddox to Present at Special Called Public Safety Committee Meeting

Mayor Walt Maddox will present his new community engagement initiative for the Tuscaloosa Police Department (TPD) during a special called Public Safety Committee meeting on Tuesday, August 11 at 4 p.m.

Over the last several weeks, Mayor Maddox, Chief Blankley, TPD officers and senior leadership team members have met with citizens, community leaders, educators, pastors, elected officials and other stakeholders to listen and shape a comprehensive plan for community policing efforts in Tuscaloosa. Additionally, the City hosted three virtual town hall meetings via Facebook Live.

The result of these meetings is the driving force behind this new initiative designed to unite the city, TPD and community members.

“When Chief Blankley interviewed this past February, one of his primary goals was to establish meaningful relationships within our community,” said Maddox. “The time is now, and I hope our federal, state and local partners will join with us. The journey begins by listening and learning.”

Blankley has also been active in engaging his officers with additional training and reviews of best practices across the nation.

“Each day, our officers put their lives on the line because they believe in the mission of protecting and serving,” said Blankley. “When we are engaged in our neighborhoods, we can build lasting relationships that help keep our community safe and vibrant.”

The special called Public Safety Committee meeting will air live to the public via Facebook Live.
