May 7, 2025
Mayor Walt Maddox has appointed Dr. Richard Rush to lead the City of Tuscaloosa’s Government Relations, External Affairs, and Crisis Communication efforts effective July 1, 2025. Rush has served as the Executive Director of Strategic Communications for the City of Tuscaloosa since 2019 and brings nearly two decades of experience across public, private, and academic sectors.
“Dr. Rush is a dedicated public servant, with a true gift of uniting stakeholders to find common ground. Tuscaloosa’s future is tied directly to the work of the Alabama Legislature and other key constituencies. Dr. Rush’s ability to communicate with purpose makes him the right person to work with our local and state leaders on the Simplified Sales Tax, Tuscaloosa National Airport and other strategic issues.” said Mayor Walt Maddox. “I’m proud of Richard and honored to be his colleague.”
In this expanded role, Dr. Rush will lead the City’s efforts to build upon external relationships both within Tuscaloosa and across the state—helping support local priorities and broader policy conversations and opportunities. During his tenure with the City, Rush has been instrumental in strengthening relationships with business and community partners and advancing key priorities through his leadership on committees, and civic boards.
“I’m honored to step into this new role, and to continue to have the opportunity to serve the City of Tuscaloosa,” said Dr. Rush. “Tuscaloosa is a place of vision, resilience, and opportunity—and I look forward to strengthening the relationships and partnerships that move our city forward.”
