Sonya Yvette McKinstry is a native of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She is a 1988 graduate of Central High School. Sonya is married to Darryl McKinstry and they have six children and eight grandchildren.
She is co-owner of McKinstry Banquet Hall and “It’s All About U” Events where she is an event planner, designer and decorator. She is currently employed with the Administrative Office of Courts where she has been a Judicial Assistant in the Tuscaloosa Circuit Court for over 17 years.
Sonya was first elected to the Tuscaloosa City Council in August 2013. She is currently serving her second term on the council where she was unopposed. Councilwoman McKinstry is the current chair of the City’s finance committee, chair of the City’s insurance and litigation committee, a member of the City’s administration committee, and serves as an alternate member of the City’s community development committee.
She has served on several boards including the West Alabama Community Service-Head Start Board and Tuscaloosa Sister Cities Board. During Councilwoman McKinstry’s terms she has been true advocate for diversity opportunities, revitalization of neighborhoods and, in March of 2018, took a firm stand against gun violence by launching the city’s first campaign against violence of any form with calling for 100 Days of Non-Violence.
She worships and attends Beulah Missionary Baptist Church of Tuscaloosa, where she is a Deaconess, and serves on the Program Committee. Her hobbies are traveling, decorating and spending time with her family.
