Kip Tyner was a steadfast champion for Tuscaloosa, whose lifelong devotion and unwavering care shaped our community in enduring ways and whose legacy will resonate for generations. 

Kip Tyner passed away on Friday, September 18, 2026, while serving his second term as Tuscaloosa City Council President and his seventh as the District 5 City Councilor. 

First elected to the City Council in 1997, Tyner spent decades serving the City of Tuscaloosa and the Alberta Community.

Throughout his tenure, Tyner made significant contributions to the development of Alberta, spearheading projects such as the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center, the recruitment of SWJ Technology and enhancements to the University Boulevard East Improvements Project. Tyner was also a lifelong advocate for animal welfare.

At the celebration of his life and service hosted by the City of Tuscaloosa on Monday, September 28, 2026, Mayor Walt Maddox announced that the City would rename Alberta Park to Kip Tyner Plaza and 26th Avenue East to Kip Tyner Parkway in honor of the late City Council President.
