Police Patrol Officer, Recruit
Requirements
The selection process for police patrol officer positions is an extremely detailed and lengthy process. Must be at least 21 years of age at time of application Must be a U.S. Citizen. Applicants must have had no convictions for serious traffic infractions over the preceding five years and must, at the time of hire, possess a valid Alabama State Driver’s License.
Qualifications
Applicants must have had no convictions of felony crimes or misdemeanors involving moral turpitude. Applicants must possess a high school diploma from an accredited institution recognized by APOST or GED certificate. All candidates selected for employment must successfully complete 560 hours (14 weeks) of Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission Minimum Standards training within the specified time required.
Testing
Once you have submitted your application through our website and if you meet the minimum requirements, you will be sent a letter indicating the date, time and place of the physical agility test (PAT) and written examination. The PAT includes agility course (climbing, pushing, crawling, etc.), 1.5 mile run (16 minutes and 28 seconds), 18 push-ups (one-minute), and 20 sit-ups (one-minute). Study Guide for Written Exam |

Background investigation
Police Department interview
Placement on roster of eligible (hiring list)
You must pass each of the above-referenced steps to proceed to the next step of the application process.
Conditional Offer
If you are placed on the roster of eligibles and a vacancy occurs in the Police Department, you may be presented a conditional offer of employment. You will then be required to submit to and successfully complete the following phases:
- Physical examination
- Drug screen
- Polygraph examination
- Psychological evaluation
Final Offer
If you successfully complete all phases of the conditional offer of employment, you may be presented a final offer of employment. Your employment as a Police Patrol Officer Recruit will require you to successfully complete certification with the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission.
