On September 29, 2026, the Tuscaloosa City Council unanimously elected Councilwoman Raevan Howard as President Pro Tempore. Howard is the first African American woman to serve as Tuscaloosa City Council President.
Howard was born in Tuscaloosa to former City Councilor Bobby Howard and Kim Howard. She graduated from Central High School and received a bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of Alabama.
She serves on the Board of Trustees for Culver Road Church, where she has been a member since birth. She is a Board member for the Bloody Tuesday Committee and Child Abuse Prevention Services, and she serves on the Human Development Subcommittee for the League of Municipalities. She is the mother of 5 children, Hillary, Malia, Marcus, Kristina and Kimberly.
Howard serves as the Chair of the Public Safety Committee, Vice Chair of the Community Development Committee, Member of the Finance Committee, and Alternate for the Administration and Policy Committee.
